Look at the adverbs.

Now say how Mr. Bean does the following:

  • to pack a suitcase
  • to count (shirts)
  • to swap (the shirt for a t-shirt)
  • to pick up (the teddy bear)
  • to throw away (the coke can, the swimming suit)
  • to choose (the red shirt)
  • to realise (had forgotten his shorts)
  • to squeeze (the toothpaste)
  • to snap (the toothbrush in half)
  • tu cut (the pants)


What was Mr. Bean able to do? What was he not able to do?

Look at the sentences and answer the questions:

Which sentence is about general ability?

Is it possible to change sentence a to a sentence with 'be able to'?

Is it possible to change sentence b to a sentence with 'could'?

Do we use 'managed to' to speak about:

  1. something difficult to do
  2. something that is very successful
  3. both situations?

Change these sentences to sentences with 'able to':

  1. Our guide managed to show us the caves where the bushmen lived.

  4. They can survive in temperatures of -70.

Let's change these sentences to future with 'able to':

  1. I can speak French.
  2. I can't speak Turkish.


Let's change this sentence to present perfect with 'able to':

  • We can't contact them by phone.
